The second issue which this book will consider is the range and nature of Catholic beliefs and, in particular, how religious beliefs are differentiated both among themselves and between different types of Catholics. Previous work based largely on the analysis of quantitative structured interview data (Hornsby-Smith, Lee and Turcan, 1982; Hornsby-Smith, 1987: 47-66) has indicated a considerable degree of heterodoxy of belief among English Catholics. This present study, based on the results of focused interviewing which generated more qualitative forms of data, will explore further the wide variations in the levels of knowledge and comprehension as well as the coherence and consistency of Catholic beliefs.

Broadly speaking, such a person would be viewed as a 'traditionalist'. It would, however, be inconsistent for such a person to advocate the retention of the Latin Mass while at the same time encouraging the use of lay readers or special ministers of communion. The coherence of a belief system refers to the extent to which the different constituent elements are complementary to each other and have some overriding theological principle. Thus a coherent belief system might stress the transcendent nature of the creator God, the hierarchical nature of the Church, papal authority, the priest as a sacred 'man apart', and the role of the lay person as subordinate to, and supportive of, that of the clergy.

Seven of the sample responded to an invitation to contribute to the project by drafting an account of their everyday lives, while interviews with the remaining five were tape-recorded. In order to ensure some measure of coherence in the project, informants were offered six key areas as guidelines for their contributions: the concept of the lay vocation, coping with everyday needs, moral dilemmas and priorities, sources of support, the lay experience of the Church, and the nature of lay spirituality (Hornsby-Smith, 1988: 2-3).
